Life, Art and Aging
So what does that have to do with art? It could be that art is considered more valuable as it ages. It could be that art like us, from time to time, must be painstaking restored with love. And when it is restored, often times, it will have a more vibrant colorful life to it than ever before. It could be that art is a creation, just as we are a creation, only we are so much more amazing and intricate than the best piece of art.
I saw a picture the other day of a old man making a beautiful tiny chair. His hands were in the forefront of the camera. Old brown, work worn hands, with veins raised and dirty nails, and I thought, "How amazing. Look at how very intricate his hands are. They are like a map that tells a story of a life. What beautiful hands........"
Then I saw another, of an old man, but he did not look old to me at all. In fact, his face was shining with life and a boy-like mischievousness was coming out of his eyes and his smile. Not our usual idea of beauty. But nevertheless, he is awesomely beautiful.
So perhaps, this is the point. Perhaps we should value human beings as much as we do art. Maybe we should give them a second glance just in case they might be a masterpiece. And it could be that we should redefine beauty for mankind, just as we have done for the art world. We may disagree on what art and beauty are. But one thing is for sure, as creation goes, we, by virtue of being human, are masterpieces. And that, my friends, makes us priceless.
